UK Poultry Disease Quarterly Surveillance Report (to December 2005)
By Veterinary Laboratories Agency - This report monitors trends in the major endemic poultry diseases and utilises the farmfile and VIDA (Veterinary Investigation Disease Analysis) databases. The report is compiled using disease data gathered by the network of 15 VLA regional laboratories which carry out disease investigation in the field.

Overview
At the time of writing Avian Influenza H5N1 remains a major concern for the UK poultry industry, particularly following its incursion into Turkey and most recently Western Europe. The disease has continued to feature prominently in the poultry press. The year as a whole was noteworthy for the outbreak of Newcastle disease in pheasants in July, and for the re-emergence of fowl typhoid (Salmonella Gallinarum) in poultry for the first time in many years. Red mite was highlighted in the year as a significant endemic disease and welfare problem in both
commercial layers and small hobby flocks.
Disease topics covered in this report include Marek???s disease which has shown an increase in quarterly and annual VIDA diagnostic rates, and outbreaks have occurred despite full vaccination. The diagnostic rates for blackhead (histomoniasis) have declined and it is noteworthy that the feared increases both in this disease and in motile protozoal diseases in gamebirds have not so far materialised, following the withdrawal of products specifically licensed for their control.
The statistics on page 2 of this report show a decline in broiler and layer chick placings in October ??“ December compared with the same quarter in 2004. The figures for turkey poult placings have continued to show a slight decline. Overall, however, the industry has remained reasonably buoyant through the year and has yet to see a major impact from avian influenza in terms of consumer demand.
